Continuing with the palette knife vs. brush exercise.

Again, I taped two 6x6 panels side-by-side to a larger panel. Then I sketched the same cow on both panels. This time, however, I started the palette knife painting first followed by the brushes. Also, I gave myself permission to play with the background and change it.

I also started this larger version of yesterday's cow. This one is done on a 24" by 24" Gallery Wrapped Canvas. The canvas was first prepared with modeling paste and orange gessoe. I used to use mainly black and grey gessoe, but now Orange is my color of choice. Holbein makes some really nice colored gessoe.

COWS, COWS AND MORE COWS by OLGA WAGNER

Well, actually it is the same cow done done 2 ways... Yesterday, I was feeling well enough to spend several hours in my studio...And..Wow..I had some serious FUN!

I had this idea to work on the same subject, but in different styles...Those of you who follow my work on a regular basis, know that I love working with palette knives as much as with brushes. I felt it would make for a great exercise to take the same subject on the same size panel and work one with brushes and one with knives and then to compare the end result.

So this is what I did yesterday...

First, I taped two 6x6 panels side-by-side to a larger panel. Then I sketched the same cow on both panels. I started with brushes and completed the cow on the right first...For no particular reason...I grabbed the brush first, so I went with it.. Once done with cow #1, I grabbed a small palette knife and started on cow #2.

I love the end result. I did find that working on a small sized panel, the brush makes life much easier. You have more control to mix the paint right on the panel. I will do this exercise again..Next time I will start with the palette knife and finish with brushes...

So which one of the two is your favorite???

Still fighting a sinus infection and cough...Antibiotics did not seem to resolve the issue..It's getting a bit old!

I managed to rework of of my larger cow paintings. After looking at it, I decided that I really did not like the original background...We artist have the right to change our minds...What worked for us originally, might not work as well after further scrutiny.

BASSET HOUND PAINTING UPDATED

What a day...Both, my hubby and I are sick, but what's worse is that my boy Nacho is quite a sick little kitty...It's really hard getting into the mood for painting when everybody is feeling rough, but one of my new year's resolution was that I would try and do something in my studio every day - even if it's just cleaning up or priming panels.
I went in to try and reorganize some of my clutter...that's if clutter can really be organized..During the shuffle, I came across a painting of the Basset Hound that I did few months back - It talked to me and asked for more color.. It is amazing how a mere action of cleaning up can lead to picking up a brush! The negative side of course is that now I lost interest in cleaning up my studio...Well there is always tomorrow...

This one was painted in response to the January Challenge from the DPIAG Blog. The title of the challenge was "Reflections" - Entries will be posted on January 15th. This bad boy was done with acrylics on a highly textures canvas. I wish there was a good way to capture the 3D texture and depth of the various layers of color. Seems like I could benefit from photography classes!

This glowing color combo is for sure one of the current forerunners... I took some time last night to prime a bunch of smaller canvases and panels. It's nice to have a bunch ready to go when inspiration strikes. Lately I have been using Colored Gesso by Holbein. It's rather pricey, but the coverage and color that you get from Holbein is worth every penny! Orange is my favorite by far, but I also use the red on a regular basis. I like to use a palette knife to apply the gessoe as it adds a bit of texture to the canvas, and I love texture...

I found this great EASY recipe here . Instead of Parsley I used Fresh Dill... For me, Dill goes perfectly with lemon and garlic...

For this recipe, all you need is Salmon, garlic, lemon, olive oil, and parsley or dill.... I added asparagus as the side dish...Yummy...

Here is the second painting in my "Prevailing Atmosphere" series... I am not sure that I am 100% happy with the name of this series - must sleep and ponder that some more. I am working on this series for my solo exhibition, which will be held in March at the Focal Point Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC.

The background is highly textured, which gives an interesting feel to the overall painting!

I had another 16x20 canvas that was ready to..Actually, it was a failed painting from few months ago, that made for a perfect surface to work on using palette knives. The hardest part of this painting was deciding on the color combo for the background. Originally, I was going for something with more drama, but in the end I decided on this eye pleasing combo.

After finishing the lily in powerful shades of red, I wanted to continue with more reds. This painting is based on the Venice Horses of St. Mark, the bronze statues of chariot race horses with the cutest roached manes. Love...Love the power of this color palette. This is a a rather large portrait (large for me) of my niece. It's 30inches by 40 inches and has been painted on a Gallery Style Canvas. Not only was I thrilled with the likeness that I was able to capture in this portrait , but also with the dimensionality of the hole that she is standing in. It really looks and feels like a hole.

This painting is highly textured...It started as a horse abstract in very vibrant Autumn colors and ended up as a landscape with a rather sinister mood.... That is one thing that I like about the acrylics. If you don't like something the next day, just start over...

Sorry for being away for over a week. I took a few days off to visit my family in upstate New York. Had a great time seeing my parents, brother, sister and my cutest little nephew!

I have been working on a few abstract paintings and have several that I need to photograph and post on the blog. My camera, however, has not been feeling up to producing decent images for me. Even with the photo cube and good lighting, I have been getting less than stellar photos. Maybe for Christmas I will look at splurging on a Digital SLR camera - something like Nikon D40...

ARTIST'S FLAIR - THE LOOK

My hubby is one of my biggest supporters and also the biggest critic. At the art festifall, after the booth was nicely setup and all paintings hung, he proceeded to tell me that I don't LOOK LIKE AN ARTIST (whatever that means...) According to him, I lack FLAIR! I guess my plain dress of jeans and t-shirt did not match my contemporary and colorful ART. To remedy the situation , he put his black coat on me, gave me his black hat and found a fluffy scarf in my car. I must say that the outfit did give me a boost of confidence...Weird...I guess an outfit does matter...

My look after hubby was done with me...

I have been feeling a bit under the weather lately and decided to take a short break from the world of paints. While sitting on the couch the other night, I knitted this funky little scarf with a touch of BLING. I think this one would be a bit much for me...But who knows, with a nice and simple black top it might add just the right amount of FLAIR!

I must say...This creation was much harder to photograph than any of my paintings...

Last night I worked at the Local Color Gallery in Raleigh during their First Friday Showing. The weather was great and people came out in masses. Talked to many art-lovers and many very, very interesting people.

One of the highlights of the nights was my 12x24 cow painting...It was cool to watch people as their stopped dead on their tracks in front of the big snout! I had no idea that there were that many cow connoisseurs in the world. The painting ended up being sold in the first 45 min of the reception and I am happy to report that it went to a cow-loving home!

WOW...What a weekend...

Saturday I helped with the setup of the dressage arena for the Equestrian Special Olympics. I met so many wonderful volunteers and also competitors...It was a pleasure to help out at this phenomenal event...Will be there again next year...

Sunday was my first outing at an Art Festival. The weather was perfect...People were great...Definitely worth the time and energy that went into the prep, setup and take-down...Hope to be back next year...

This abstract was finished before the weekend, but I just had no time to post it here. This is a "brother" to the abstract in my last post. Slightly different color scheme, but same approach.

Way too much on my plate lately! Work is crazy busy which doesn't give me too much time to get into the studio. This weekend is already scheduled to the max. Between the Art Festifall in Chapel Hill and setup for Equestrian Special Olympics in Raleigh I feel a bit overextended... But, that is life and I am lucky to be able to do all these things!

This painting is VERY different from my usual work. As an artist and a person, I always try to stretch my boundaries and try new endeavors. I believe that all my work with palette knifes tough me to be much less afraid of not getting the the likeness just right and let become much looser in my painting.

This painting still has an Animal presence...Can you spot it?...Hint: Closeup is in the 3rd image

I had to share another great recipe that I found extremely easy and absolutely YUMMY! I LOVE to eat great food, but I don't care for spending too much time the Kitchen. My life is way too hectic as it is...Also, my pantry (or whatever you would like to call it) is rather pathetic, and thus I always look for recipes with the least ingredients...

This creation is from the kitchen of Emeril Lagasse and only had a total pf 6 ingredients (including salt and paper)... I ended up adding some lemon juice and lemon rind to it for an added kick.

Last night's dinner - There is nothing COLD and DREARY about this little beauty!

This must be the prettiest roast chicken that ever came out of my oven. And the best part was that it was as tasty as it looked. The recipe for this bad boy can be found here . I made a few minor modification, such as adding more garlic (can you ever have enough garlic?) and carrots.

I will be using this "Garlic-Orange-Butter' rub on my turkey this year - it was absolutely DELICIOUS.

I painted this painting as part of the DPW Challenge where we were asked to paint using only 4 values. See the bottom image for the value study. After, I was done with the challenge, I added just a few strokes of Cad Red Light... This girls needs a little COLOR in her paintings!

This one was done mostly with brushes. Palette knife was used for the final few applications of paint.

As promised, I got to work on Mr. Bull. I LOVE the way he came out. The colors and textures pop on this MAN.

Pugsley is still a very sick little boy. His white blood count was pretty high and he feels pretty rotten - most likely due to the inflammation of his pancreas . He has been at the vets two days in a row now...At least he likes to travel in the car - he goes into a relaxation trance as soon as the car starts moving - it's weird, but kind of cool!

COW GONE WRONG AND PUGLSEY UPDATE

COW gone wrong...or should I say Bull gone wrong...I am stressed and it shows...I started this bull with brushes - then after getting a "bit" unhappy with it's progress, I scraped most of it of and started slapping paint on it with the same palette knife used for scraping...Somehow I scraped of his horns and never put them back - thus we have a COW!

I still really love the original photo and will need to try my hand at a more realistic painting of the gentleman.

Pugsley is still very much under the weather. I did get home early enough today to take him into the backyard to enjoy some sun and fresh air. He really seemed to enjoy watching all the crazy hummingbirds that are visiting our feeders. Tomorrow he will visit the vet for an acupuncture session - If I remember I will bring a camera to take some shots of the porcupine-pugsley!

Last week has been really tough on me. Between having to carry the pager for work and my little kitty being sick, I have not been getting any sleep. Thank goodness we have a very comfortable couch which allows me to get a couple of hours of sleep at a time. I love to wrap myself with fleece blankies and snuggle into the soft couch!

My little man, Pugsley, was just diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowl Disease (that's after suffering with chronic pancreatitis for the last 3 years - Poor dude can't get any breaks... See the picture of the cutie below...

It is amazing how artist's MOJO works and where the inspiration comes from. I found this pretty photo (see bottom of this post) in the image library on wetcavas site. The muscular buttocks spoke to me and the painting was born. Again, I wanted to stick to a very limited color palette. The colors used to create this beauty were: Royal Blue, Indigo, Carmine Lake, Naples Yellow and Naples Yellow Golden and Titanium White.

Everyone knows the saying "beauty is skin deep" -

That saying applies well to some of Flea-Bitten Grey horses. Flea-bitten Grey is a version of grey with speckles of the original coat color mixed in with the white hairs. Did you know that grey horses are typically born with a solid colored coat, such as bay, but with age they grey out. Grey comes from a Dominant gene, i.e. one of the parents has to be grey. Aren't genetics a GRAND thing....

Last night, I decided to start a series of a few small paintings, mainly to try out some new and interesting color combinations.

This dramatic little beauty was created with a very limited color palette. I used Chrome Yellow, Cad Red, Ultramarine and a touch of white. Originally, I started with Naples Yellow, but the drama was not there, so I bumped it to Chrome Yellow and VOILA -I LOVE it!

This is the BIG boy that I worked on last night...I Loved the blue hat in the original photo and had to put in down on canvas. The hat in this painting has a great deal of turquoise in it, which for some reason did not translate well in the photo shoot.

Painting this one was really exhilirating. Since it was not a commission, I did not have to stress about the likeness and instead got to play with putting the paint down on the canvas and moving it around with knives and fingers.

What a day...It started with a dentist visit to get a crown and ended with creation of this little beauty!

I was not going to paint today, as I got home pretty worn out and with a throbbing side of the face. Aftre dinner, I did go into my art studio to cleanup and rearrange a few things. While moving some stuff I came across a 12 x 12 canvas that was toned light blue. I picked it up and MOJO took over and let me create this totally fictitious horse. I LOVE the color scheme on this boy!!!

It has been a very painful day at work today. It was long , hard and the worst part of the day was hearing the news that friend's son was in a horrendous car accident over the weekend. He is only 18 and was supposed to graduate this Sunday. He is fighting for his life and so is his family...

Did you know that Prom and Graduation are the two events that increase the risk of teen car accidents. I had no clue...Until last week... When one of our local communities lost 3 boys in one high speed accident...And now, my friend is dealing with the pain...That's not fair...

This boy here is one of my favorites!

DRESSAGE HORSE AND RIDER - SOLD

Here is an interesting crop of a dressage rider in a competition ring. I have no idea who the rider is. I took a bunch of photos at couple of the horse shows last year and never kept track of who the partnerships was. It's better this way - less pressure if you are working anonymously.

I think I will try this crop on a larger scale. maybe 30" x 30" ???
